Bristol Aircraft Design OfficeMr John Battersby, Archivist, Bristol Aero Collection Kemble, has received a request from Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh for the following information: - Under the supervision of a Mr Ian Black; undergraduate research is being conducted on the military aircraft design process from 1945-1960. It is, apparently, very difficult to track down former ex-employees of British aircraft design offices from that era. Part of the teams remit is to preserve the intimate first-hand knowledge that those surviving have of design in the UK aircraft industry. It is hoped to enlist the help of any relevant retired Bristol design team managers, who might be prepared to assist with this project. The research being undertaken is principally concerned with evaluating and documenting the methods, practices and management of design, with respect to the information flow that occurred through the design office and company, from the issue of the relevant ministry specification through to final delivery. It is intended to publish the outcomes of the research in the academic press at the completion of the project. Mr Black was advised that Bristol had little military involvement after the end of WW2. Nevertheless, the helicopter side (Sycamore & Belvedere), experimentals - T.188, designs submitted for tenders & proposals, but which never made it (such as T.178 rocket fighter) and developed designs - Brigand/Buckingham would all be of interest. Missiles and unmanned vehicles are not of interest. Contact details for Mr Black are given in the printed version of this newsletter.
OVERSEAS MEMBERS ONLYA number of our overseas members have remarked on the cost of newsletter postage when related to membership fees and that e-mail could prove a cheaper option. May I draw to your attention the Pensioner Website published on the internet where the RMSA Newsletter (among other very interesting articles) can be viewed and if required downloaded. The Newsletter is displayed in an incomplete form, whereby all contact details etc are omitted to avoid possible contravention of the Data Protection Act. The missing pages can be e-mailed with no problem. UK members will continue to receive hard copy Newsletters. All we require from our overseas members is the e-mail address to facilitate this. If you have no computer access then Newsletters will continue to be sent as hard copy. You can advise me of your details by e-mail addressed to: -
