Notices and News

We’re All Going to the Zoo Tomorrow.

Those are the opening words of a quite well known song and I recently had to hear them for real.

My wife and I have had my ten years old granddaughter and her mother vacationing with us from Canada, and Bristol Zoological Gardens was one of the places she wanted to visit. We decided to make it a family day out and set off at a reasonable hour to take advantage of the special offer from the local bus company where concessions are available for senior citizens and the fare includes entrance to the zoo. Good idea that…as you go right to the head of the queue with pre-purchased tickets.

Bristol Zoo was always a favourite place for me to visit in the past but I have not had the pleasure of going there for more years than I care to remember.

The front entrance is exactly as I remembered it from the past and nothing much has changed except perhaps for a coat of paint. The changes on entry though are far more extensive. Almost all the old wire cages that housed wildlife have mostly disappeared and have been replaced with more natural enclosures with glass fronts – much more viewer friendly and with an element of competition for the young like… can you hold your breath longer than this creature – and – can you stand on one leg longer than... say a flamingo.

The gardens as always are spectacular and a riot of colour. We were lucky on the day as the weather was near perfect and I was able to keep the camera fully occupied as you can see from some of the results. A good day was had by all
