During the annual pre-OTS pelvic meeting we discussed a number of current topics. We had some exciting research opportunities discussed which will hopefully come to fruition over the coming years. Ash and I also put it out to the group to see what other topics people wanted to discuss. There was lots of interest in trying to develop some consensus statements on common topics in order to improve patient care, not just in the MTCs but also in the trauma units around the country for patients sustaining pelvic and acetabular fractures.
There was a real appetite in the room to try and do something worthwhile as we are growing in numbers and there is a great deal of experience in UK Pelvic surgery now.
The elephant in the room was discussed that we have been an informal group for a long time now and it seemed the right time to try and formalise the group as a recognised society. With all of us having strong affiliations with the OTS the natural place was to remain alongside the OTS rather than becoming separated.
James Bassett and Chris Jordan took on the task of collecting details of all the members and ran an election to start to put together a committee.
I have been given the honour and privilege having been nominated as the first Pelvic Chair to represent BAPAS with a 2 year tenure until the OTS meeting in 2026. Sharon Scott is the Chair elect and will take over at that stage for another 2 years.
Following on from their work in helping to formalise the society and running the consensus group I asked James and Chris to remain on the committee as policy lead and secretary respectively. Mark Chamberlain is our Media and Comms lead and we have appointed Nik Kanakaris and Jon Dwyer as the Research and Education leads respectively to align the committee with the OTS.
There’s clearly a great desire to push forwards and it seems our European counterparts as well as our colleagues in the US are now doing the same.
